Synopsis

On an Earth damaged by war, bounty hunter Rick Deckard is assigned to pursue androids whose presence is forbidden. In the same depleted world, owning a living animal carries status and artificial animals can fill the gap left by vanished species. The pursuit places a professional obligation beside unsettled distinctions between natural and manufactured life. Philip K. Dick's standalone science-fiction novel connects those distinctions to everyday possessions, social aspirations and the question of which beings deserve care. It was first published in 1968 and inspired Blade Runner; the book and film are distinct works.
