Mystery & Thriller News
Your next thriller in September 2026
Missing children, covert operations and killers who turn prejudice into a death sentence. These five thrillers from 2024 to 2026 range from police investigations to espionage and military action.
All five books belong to series, so we also explain where each one fits to help you plan your reading.
1. Little Children by Angela Marsons
2025 · Police thriller
Two boys disappear from a seaside town, and Kim Stone arrives with her team to find them. But the investigation has a second purpose: uncovering possible corruption within the local police. To do that, the detectives must pretend to be incompetent while working a case in which every hour matters.
The premise combines the urgency of missing children with another obstacle: the investigators cannot freely trust the people who should be helping them. It is a prospect for readers drawn to police investigations complicated by internal secrets and questionable loyalties.
Although it is book 22 in the Kim Stone series, it can be read as a standalone.
2. Midnight by F. X. Holden
2024 · Military thriller
Midnight takes suspense into a military setting. It depicts a fictional war in the Pacific, with Taiwan at the centre of the conflict and operations pitting American and allied forces against a Chinese-Russian coalition.
The story brings together tactical missions, combat and strategic decisions. Its tension centres on teams operating in the field as the conflict threatens to spread. Of the books in this selection, this is the one most directly aimed at readers interested in military action and weapons technology.
It is book four in Aggressor, so reading the earlier instalments will help you follow the developing conflict.
3. The Hard Line by Mark Greaney
2026 · Espionage and action
A succession of attacks compromises covert operations and leaves Court Gentry's team increasingly exposed. As he tries to discover who is dismantling their network, an assassin known as Whetstone turns Gentry himself and those close to him into targets.
The novel sets up an espionage thriller in which professional threats reach into personal life. Its premise suits readers looking for covert operations, pursuit and a protagonist forced to defend himself against someone who understands his vulnerabilities.
It is book 15 in Gray Man, following Midnight Black, which also appears in this selection.
4. Midnight Black by Mark Greaney
2025 · Espionage and action
Zoya Zakharova is being held in a Russian penal colony. For Court Gentry, rescuing her means entering hostile territory and confronting a system determined to keep her imprisoned.
At the centre of this story is a rescue mission with a deeply personal motivation. Isolation, freezing conditions and the difficulty of reaching Zoya shape a premise suited to readers who enjoy infiltration suspense and operations against seemingly inaccessible targets.
It is book 14 in Gray Man. If you are interested in both Greaney titles featured here, read Midnight Black before The Hard Line.
5. Wicked Women by Angela Marsons
2026 · Police thriller
The murder of a social worker forces Kim Stone to investigate a life that divides opinion. To some, she was a devoted mother; to others, she was responsible for breaking families apart. A second death appears to point to a killer punishing women they consider guilty, until another victim challenges that explanation.
The investigation revolves around reputation, revenge and the danger of accepting a pattern too soon. Its premise may particularly appeal to readers who enjoy finding connections between victims and reconsidering their suspicions as new evidence emerges.
It is book 23 in Kim Stone, although it can also be read as a standalone.
