Beautiful Ugly: a missing wife and an unsettling island
Alice Feeney offers a psychological mystery for readers drawn to uncertain perception, fractured relationships and isolation.

Why this premise stands out
A year after his wife Abby disappears, writer Grady Green travels to a Scottish island and sees a woman who looks like her. The publisher's setup makes recognition itself a problem: seeing something familiar need not make a person feel safer.
That is the strongest reason to consider Beautiful Ugly from our 2025 selection. A setting that promises distance from everyday life can also reduce access to reassurance. Before opening the book, ask whether isolation is an atmosphere you enjoy or one you would rather avoid.
Choose it for the question of perspective
This guide recommends approaching the novel through the difference between observation and interpretation. Someone may accurately report what they see while misunderstanding what it means. You do not have to decide in advance that a narrator is lying to remain curious about the limits of their account.
If your preferred mystery supplies a stable investigative team and a clear sequence of procedural steps, sample this one first. Its advertised ingredients are a troubled marriage, disappearance and psychological uncertainty. That is a different invitation from a conventional police case.
Reading without spoiling the reveal
Keep a note of claims that depend on recognition: a face, a place, a familiar habit. Next to each, distinguish what is directly observed from what is assumed. This is a way to remain attentive, not a promise that every detail will become a clue.
For a reading group, discuss whether grief creates a greater need for certainty or a greater willingness to accept an unlikely explanation. How does being a professional storyteller complicate the way you listen to a character's version of events?
Before choosing an edition
Beautiful Ugly is a separate novel, so no earlier Feeney book is required. Our linked English US hardcover is the Flatiron Books edition. The central disappearance and its emotional aftermath are present from the start; consider those themes when choosing it as a gift. Our guide does not evaluate the ending or claim a complete reading of the novel.
