Bury Our Bones in the Midnight Soil: the price of wanting more

V. E. Schwab brings three women's lives into a gothic story of hunger, desire and the possibility of living beyond ordinary limits.

The invitation

Schwab's novel links María, Charlotte and Alice across different centuries and settings. Its publisher foregrounds immortality, love and rage. For this guide, the most interesting entry point is the distinction between gaining freedom and knowing what to do with it.

Immortality can sound like a solution to scarcity: more years, more choices, more chances. It also raises a less comfortable question. If time is no longer the limit, what prevents desire from becoming an endless demand? You can take that question into the novel without knowing any of its later revelations.

Who should put it on their list?

Consider this for gothic fantasy with a focus on women's relationships and appetite for a different life. It may particularly interest readers who enjoy comparing lives across historical settings rather than following a quest through a single invented kingdom.

The distinction matters if you are choosing by genre alone. Fantasy can promise tactical battles, elaborate systems of magic or intimate supernatural drama. The publisher's description points toward the last of these. Sample the opening if atmosphere and narrative voice determine whether a long novel works for you.

A reading lens: freedom and dependence

Watch for the difference between an opportunity that expands someone's choices and an offer that creates a new obligation. Those possibilities can look similar at first. Avoid assuming that a character's wish to escape makes every available escape equally desirable.

For discussion, ask whether a promise of permanent love would mean the same thing to someone with an ordinary lifespan and someone without it. Can an unequal relationship become equal simply because both people want to remain in it?

Before you buy

The linked edition is the English Tor Books hardcover. This guide treats the book as an individual selection, with no need to buy Schwab's other novels first. Expect the premise to bring mortality, desire and power into the conversation; do not choose it solely for the comforting idea of extra time. Our analysis is a research-based reading invitation, not a judgment on the full text.
