Not Quite Dead Yet: a murder mystery with no time to spare
Holly Jackson gives the countdown thriller a personal twist: the person seeking the killer is also the victim.

The hook
After an attack, Jet Mason has a week to investigate her own impending death. Jackson's first adult novel places a familiar detective question inside an unusually intimate deadline. It won the 2025 Goodreads Mystery & Thriller category.
That setup offers two different reasons to open the book. There is the practical puzzle of identifying an attacker, but also the uncomfortable question of what someone would stop postponing if time suddenly became finite. For a reading group, the second question may offer more conversation than guessing names.
Is this your kind of thriller?
Choose this if an immediate, easily grasped premise helps you settle into a mystery. The attraction is the collision between investigation and limited time. Our recommendation is based on that premise; it is not a verdict on whether every eventual reveal earns its place.
Readers hoping for a low-stress escape should consider the central situation first. A young woman's serious injury and anticipated death are the engine of the story, not incidental background. If mortality or family grief is too close to home, a different mystery may suit the moment better.
A useful way to read it
Keep two small lists: what Jet learns, and what she decides matters. A countdown can make every clue seem equally urgent; separating information from priorities helps you notice the emotional stakes without turning the novel into homework.
Ask your group: does urgency make a character more honest, or simply more willing to take risks? What would count as a meaningful victory when solving a crime cannot necessarily undo its harm?
Before you buy
This is an adult novel, separate from the A Good Girl's Guide to Murder series. Familiarity with those books is not required. The purchase panel identifies the English-language US hardcover; translated editions may have a different title and ISBN. Check the chosen format on Amazon before ordering.
