The Strength of the Few: the next step in the Hierarchy

James Islington's second Hierarchy novel is a substantial return for readers already invested in The Will of the Many.

Read the first book first

The Strength of the Few is the second Hierarchy novel. It continues Vis's story after The Will of the Many. We are keeping the synopsis deliberately short because even the publisher's description reveals developments from the first volume.

This is the clearest series commitment in our 2025 fantasy selection. If you are new to Islington, do not let a year-end ranking talk you into beginning in the middle. A book can be a strong choice for an existing audience without being the right first purchase for everyone else.

Why returning readers may consider it

The appeal of a second epic-fantasy volume is partly structural. Earlier rules and loyalties can now be tested rather than merely introduced. The question worth bringing is what you want from that expansion: clearer answers, a larger set of possibilities, or consequences for choices already made.

Before starting, refresh your memory of the first novel's ending using the book itself or your own notes. Searching for a quick recap can expose you to later revelations. Our guide avoids describing the sequel's new circumstances so you can make that transition yourself.

A manageable approach to a long novel

Use a short list of unresolved questions from book one, not a complete encyclopedia of names. Update it when an answer changes what you understand, rather than after every scene. That approach keeps a long reading project connected to your curiosity.

For discussion, consider whether gaining power makes a character freer or gives them more obligations. How should an earlier promise be judged when the person making it later discovers that their understanding of the world was incomplete?

Before ordering

The panel identifies the English Saga Press hardcover. Its length makes format a meaningful choice: consider how comfortably you read a large physical volume before selecting it as a travel book or gift. This is book two in a continuing sequence, not a completed-series set. We have verified the edition and series position, while making no claim to have evaluated the full novel's pacing or ending.
